The Chosen Ones – November 15-18, 2010

Wednesday, November 17 – Future Islands, Lonnie Walker, Nomen Novum @ Eyedrum 10pm, $7

Atlanta’s Nomen Novum is one of my favorite local bands. The duo of David Norbery and Mark Godfrey blend an assortment of atmospheric, electronic recordings with hazy guitars and experimental instrumentation. Their sound reminds me of a Radiohead/Vampire Weekend union, though Nomen Novum can’t outright be compared to either. There’s a sincerity and playfulness in their music that resonates through each song.

Nomen Novum will be opening up for Baltimore new-wavers, Future Islands and Lonnie Walker (Raleigh), who manages to invent his own musical style combining punk, dance, and folk rock.

Thursday, November 18 – Nophi Compilation Four – Official Worldwide Release Party @ Eastside Lounge

Nophi Recordings are celebrating their latest compilation album, with a party at Eastside Lounge featuring performances by Citizen Green, R_Garcia, and Fader Vixen, all featured on the Nophi Compilation 4 album. This compilation of electronic and experimental rock artists from Atlanta has received some great feedback from the local press. It features 20 songs from various independent Atlanta artists, including Sonen, The Extraordinary Contraptions, Jungol, Dirty Lungs, Meut, and Capibara.

DJ sets by Taradactyl and Threv will close out the night. Get there early for a full album listening party for Compilation 4.

Thursday, November 18 – Back Pockets, Lera Lynn, Night Driving in Small Cars (UPSTAIRS), A.Grimes, Quiet Hooves, Husseins (Basement) @ The Star Bar, FREE

I usually write my own show preview, but because I loved it so much, here’s the press release:

Atlanta and Athens are so close, yet they rarely hug each other on the same stages.  Almost never on stages and basements in one night. But(t)  . . . It will at Star Bar for an insane night of rainbow exploding magic for FREEBIES!  No money at the door.  NO MONEY AT THE DOOR.  BACKPOCKETS are a hodgepodge of Atlanta Art/Theater/Music/Bored Kids making and creating little worlds of happiness.  QUIET HOOVES cram 10 Athens music regulars into a mix of off kilter dancey madness.  A GRIMES scares people.  LERA LYNN soothes you.  NIGHT DRIVING IN SMALL TOWNS makes toes tap right at the edge of yer sneakers. HUSSEINS are punk.  Punk punks.

No one really knows how to make a press release.

Friday, November 12 – Generations Art, Music, and Motorcycle Show @ The Archive Gallery

The musical guests set to play at Archive Gallery’s grand re-opening this Friday are just as awesome as the concept of the event! Sonen, Vegan Coke, and House Cat are three very different bands. Sonen is the electro-rock champion of Atlanta (Creative Loafing’s readers and critics pick Best of 2010 Electronic Act), while Vegan Coke throw down their own brand of mostly improvised prog guitar and drums mania. House Cat is new on my radar of lo-fi bands with an interesting sound on the edge of pop and avant-garde.

If the music weren’t enough, the exhibit will feature a multimedia art show with motorcylces, performance art, sculptures, photography, paintings, jewelery, and more in an effort to depict the essence of different eras and how technology has influenced culture throughout time, as well as what we might find in the future. Full list of artists to collaborate on this exhibition can be found here.

This party gets even better with free admission, complimentary wine and food, and $2 PBR! Details.

Saturday, November 13 – 2nd Annual Earball @ Eyedrum
For the second year in a row, Eyedrum is putting together an all day festival featuring local musicians willing to explore the dimensions of their craft outside of the standard performance. This year’s event is especially sentimental, since it will be the last time Eyedrum will hold the event in their current location. By the end of the year, Eyedrum will be moving to a new, as of yet, undisclosed space.

The performers at Earball 2010 include Wowser Bowser, The Gazelles, Fader Vixen, Tendaberry, Back Pockets, and King Congregation, and there’s no telling what kind of experimentation will ensue with each performance! There’s even talk of naked performance art to take place, so prepare your eyeballs for Earball. Details
