Though not a music event, the Dodekapus Art Collective event, I Can Dream All Day brings imagination and creativity to the forefront, while also raising funds and awareness for some worthy humanitarian efforts. The art show, Saturday, February 5, takes place in the warehouse of the wonderful Relapse Theatre, where the group of collaborative artists will offer “a wild and experimental journey through the land of dreams and nightmares with magical performances, pillow fights, mysterious potions, and extravagant displays of the imagination.”

The experience gets started at 8pm and is only $5, unless you bring a canned food item for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, in which case your entry drops to $3. A silent auction of artwork created by a group of kids at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta will also be running throughout the evening, with proceeds going back to this top-notch non-profit institution. The artwork being auctioned off was made during Dodekapus’ visit to the Children’s hospital in December, when the collective threw an art party for these kids, helping them visually depict their hopes and dreams.

The first weekend of the new year brings some pretty stellar shows. Among them is this little treat at The Drunken Unicorn, featuring the electro-rock of Attention System, Siberia My Sweet, and a great little band from Nashville called Brenn. They came through Atlanta a few months ago to play at Lenny’s, only to turn around and go back home, because the place had no electricity that night. I’m sure this night will make up for that! $7, 21+ Doors @ 9 pm

Friday, January 7 – Ohmpark’s 4th Year Anniversary Party w/ From Exile, Jungol, This Piano Plays Itself, Nigredo, Qurious @ The Earl

Joining them are the hubby/wife duo, La Chansons that bring on the synth-laden dance pop rock so that you can get your dance on!

Saturday, November 27 – Nerdkween CD Release w/ Parallel Poke and Richard Parsons @ The Highland Inn Ballroom $8, 21+ 9pm

Richard Parsons will be opening up with his impressive, organically layered tunes that pack an emotional punch through solid, soulful songwriting.

Saturday, November 27 – Swine Song Presents: Wake of the Titan, The Humboldt Trio, The Common Axes @ The Drunken Unicorn $6, 21+ 9pm

Wake of the Titan is an incredibly impressive band. The trio is made up of trained musicians that live and breath through their instruments, even giving the illusion that body and instrument have become one on stage.

They sound a bit like Muse and a bit like Nine Inch Nails, but Wake of the Titan will wow you in their own way with their spacey rock and symbolic lyrical imagery. And don’t be shy about talking to them, they are some of the nicest guys on the planet.

Joining them are the spectacular instrumentalists, The Humboldt Trio and The Common Axes, that have dubbed their genre of music as “ghost rock.” I’m intrigued.

Honorable Mention:The Stuffing w/ Manchester Orchestra, Death on Two Wheels, O’Brother, Dead Confederate and more @ The Center Stage Complex

This show is sold out, but I guess you can see why. Put on by Atlanta label, Favorite Gentlemen, this showcase of rock will take place throughout the Center Stage Complex on Wednesday, November 24.

Wednesday, November 17 – Future Islands, Lonnie Walker, Nomen Novum @ Eyedrum 10pm, $7

Atlanta’s Nomen Novum is one of my favorite local bands. The duo of David Norbery and Mark Godfrey blend an assortment of atmospheric, electronic recordings with hazy guitars and experimental instrumentation. Their sound reminds me of a Radiohead/Vampire Weekend union, though Nomen Novum can’t outright be compared to either. There’s a sincerity and playfulness in their music that resonates through each song.

Nomen Novum will be opening up for Baltimore new-wavers, Future Islands and Lonnie Walker (Raleigh), who manages to invent his own musical style combining punk, dance, and folk rock.

Get Nomen Novum’s latest offering, Go Primal, for free at http://www.nomennovum.net/

This compilation of electronic and experimental rock artists from Atlanta has received some great feedback from the local press. It features 20 songs from various independent Atlanta artists, including Sonen, The Extraordinary Contraptions, Jungol, Dirty Lungs, Meut, and Capibara.

DJ sets by Taradactyl and Threv will close out the night. Get there early for a full album listening party for Compilation 4.

Thursday, November 18 – Back Pockets, Lera Lynn, Night Driving in Small Cars (UPSTAIRS), A.Grimes, Quiet Hooves, Husseins (Basement) @ The Star Bar, FREE

I usually write my own show preview, but because I loved it so much, here’s the press release:

Atlanta and Athens are so close, yet they rarely hug each other on the same stages.  Almost never on stages and basements in one night. But(t)  . . . It will at Star Bar for an insane night of rainbow exploding magic for FREEBIES!  No money at the door.  NO MONEY AT THE DOOR.  BACKPOCKETS are a hodgepodge of Atlanta Art/Theater/Music/Bored Kids making and creating little worlds of happiness.  QUIET HOOVES cram 10 Athens music regulars into a mix of off kilter dancey madness.  A GRIMES scares people.  LERA LYNN soothes you.  NIGHT DRIVING IN SMALL TOWNS makes toes tap right at the edge of yer sneakers. HUSSEINS are punk.  Punk punks.

No one really knows how to make a press release.
